“Martians ne chand te hamla kar dita” (Martians came and attacked the moon) becomes a haunting refrain by Ishar Singh Grewal, an almost dying patriarch played by Naseeruddin Shah, as he struggles to communicate with his grandson through a language that is fragmented, metaphorical, whimsical, and deeply wounded. Diljit Dosanjh plays Nirvair, Ishar’s NRI grandson, who arrives expecting to merely witness the inevitable loss of his nonagenarian grandfather, only to find himself gradually gripped by the latter’s memories and forced into a renegotiation with ideas of home, love, loss, and borders.

Main Vaapas Aaunga (2026) unfolds during the final days of Ishar’s life, as a paralytic stroke leaves him physically confined and dementia draws him back to perhaps the softest, and also the most searing, landscape of his memory: Punjab, 1947.
