On 31 August 2026, the Court of Arbitration (CoA) at The Hague ruled that the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) “remains fully in force” and that India’s April 2025 decision to place the Treaty in “abeyance” did not suspend its obligations under the agreement. The Court’s interpretation of Article XII (4) states that the Treaty continues until terminated by a duly ratified agreement between the two governments, and that the Treaty contains no provision for unilateral abeyance or suspension. The Court also imposed interim restrictions concerning the 850 MW run-of-the-river Ratle hydroelectric project on the Chenab.
