A slew of recent developments involving Bangladesh have raised a fundamental question for Indian foreign policy.

Is India really desperate to have Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visit New Delhi at the earliest? And, what makes the relationship so on the edge now when, in the early days of Rahman being sworn in, the bilateral relationship appeared to be getting back on track?

One can surmise that Dhaka is currently upset by the remarks made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her recent media interaction from India, while New Delhi has an unstated problem with Rahman’s subsequent Beijing visit and signing of a series of pacts with China, which, on the surface, appear to tilt the India-Bangladesh relationship away from New Delhi.
