For New Delhi, August is likely to be defined by three interconnected priorities: advancing India’s BRICS Chairship, strengthening trade diplomacy, and preparing the diplomatic agenda for the BRICS Leaders’ Summit on 12–13 September in New Delhi. A series of ministerial meetings across culture and tourism will keep India at the centre of BRICS engagement, while international trade forums will reinforce efforts to expand commercial partnerships and attract overseas buyers. The concluding weeks of the Monsoon Session of Parliament will supply the domestic backdrop for debate on external economic and foreign policy questions.
The month’s principal diplomatic activity will unfold under India’s BRICS Chairship. Bhopal will host the 3rd BRICS Culture Working Group Meeting (5–6 August), followed by the BRICS Cultural Festival (6–7 August) and the BRICS Culture Ministers’ Meeting (7–8 August). These meetings will focus on cultural cooperation, the protection and restitution of cultural heritage, creative industries, and the role of culture in sustainable development, contributing to preparations for the BRICS Leaders’ Summit later this year.
Attention will then shift to Jaipur, where India will host the 2nd BRICS Tourism Working Group Meeting on 19–20 August, followed by the BRICS Tourism Ministers’ Meeting on 21–22 August. Discussions will centre on artificial intelligence in tourism, sustainable and responsible tourism, skills development, and travel facilitation, reflecting India’s effort to broaden BRICS cooperation into practical, people-centric sectors.
Economic diplomacy will run alongside the BRICS calendar. The Bharatiya Vyapar Mahotsav, held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from 12 to 15 August, is organised by the India Trade Promotion Organisation with the Confederation of All India Traders and is expected to draw exhibitors, overseas buyers and trade delegations across sectors from textiles and engineering goods to pharmaceuticals. Commercial in focus, the event supports India’s broader strategy of diversifying export markets and deepening international economic engagement through trade diplomacy. The Monsoon Session of Parliament, scheduled to conclude on 13 August, will continue to provide the legislative backdrop for the government’s economic and external policy agenda.
Defence diplomacy will extend the month’s activity beyond the BRICS framework. Indian Air Force (IAF) Rafale multirole fighters, supported by C-17 Globemaster III transport and IL-78 air-to-air refuelling aircraft, are participating in Exercise Pitch Black 2026, the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) biennial multinational air combat exercise running from 20 July to 7 August across RAAF bases at Darwin, Tindal, and Amberley. The largest edition in the exercise’s 45-year history, Pitch Black 2026 brings together personnel from 20 countries for complex large-force employment across northern Australia’s training ranges. New Delhi’s decision to commit its most advanced operational fighter platform, rather than the Su-30 MKI deployed to the 2024 and 2022 editions, signals deepening security engagement with Indo-Pacific partners and adds a defence track to a month otherwise shaped by BRICS engagements.
