What happened?
On 29 June 2025, Pakistan’s Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir described terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir as a “legitimate and lawful struggle” during a ceremony at the Pakistan Naval Academy in Karachi. He warned of a “befitting response” to any Indian military action and claimed Pakistan acted as a “net regional stabiliser.” Munir also invoked Pakistan’s commitment to Kashmiris’ self-determination.
Why it matters to India
Munir’s remarks reflect Pakistan’s continued justification of cross-border terrorism, undermining bilateral relations and regional stability. India strongly maintains that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country and has consistently rejected Pakistan’s narrative. The comments further strain post-Article 370 diplomatic ties and reinforce India’s policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism and its sponsors.
