What happened:
US defence major Lockheed Martin said its C-130J Super Hercules is the best option for the Indian Air Force’s medium transport aircraft (MTA) requirement, as India plans to procure around 80 military transport planes. Company officials said that if selected, Lockheed Martin would establish the first-ever C-130J production hub outside the US in India, in partnership with Tata Advanced Systems.
Why it matters to India:
The proposal supports India’s defence indigenisation and Make in India goals, could significantly boost the domestic aerospace manufacturing ecosystem, and strengthen India–US defence cooperation. Inducting more C-130Js would also enhance India’s tactical airlift capability and interoperability within the Quad.
