India to assume Chairpersonship of Kimberley Process from January 1, 2026

What happened:

India will assume the chairpersonship of the Kimberley Process (KP) from January 1, 2026, after being selected by the KP Plenary, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said. India takes over as Vice Chair from December 25, 2025, marking the third time it will lead the global initiative aimed at preventing the trade in conflict diamonds.

Why it matters to India:

India’s leadership reflects global trust in its commitment to transparency and responsible trade. As a major diamond manufacturing and trading hub, India’s chairmanship strengthens its role in shaping global norms on conflict-free diamonds, governance, and traceability, while reinforcing its position in the international diamond value chain.
