India gets first standard for bomb disposal systems to boost security

What happened:

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) notified IS 19445:2025, India’s first dedicated standard for bomb disposal systems, developed at the request of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Terminal Ballistic Research Laboratory. The standard lays down guidelines to evaluate bomb disposal equipment against blast and splinter effects and is meant for voluntary adoption.

Why it matters to India:

The new standard fills a critical gap in India’s security preparedness by introducing uniform testing and performance benchmarks tailored to Indian threat conditions. It is expected to improve the safety and reliability of bomb disposal systems used by armed forces, police, and security agencies, while also boosting quality-driven domestic manufacturing and global competitiveness.
