India, EU sign landmark Security and Defence Partnership

What happened:

On January 27, India and the European Union signed a Security and Defence Partnership (SDP) at the 16th India–EU Summit, establishing the first overarching framework for cooperation in areas such as maritime security, defence industry and technology, cyber and hybrid threats, space, and counterterrorism. Both sides also agreed to launch negotiations on a Security of Information Agreement and institutionalise an annual India–EU Security and Defence Dialogue.

Why it matters:

The SDP marks a major step in India–EU strategic convergence, strengthening defence cooperation, regional security engagement in the Indo-Pacific, and collaboration on emerging global security challenges.
