Prof Lama, till recently a Professor in JNU, served as a Member, National Security Advisory Board, Govt of India and Founding Vice Chancellor, Central University of Sikkim.  He is presently Emeritus Chief Economic Adviser, Government of Sikkim. He led the Team of Experts to prepare the North East Region Vision 2047 for the MDoNER, GOI. He addressed the newly elected Parliamentarians of Myanmar at Nay Pyi Taw in March 2026.
