DRDO achieves major milestone in hypersonic missile development

What happened:

On January 9, 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a long-duration ground test of its actively cooled, full-scale scramjet combustor at the Scramjet Connect Pipe Test (SCPT) facility. The test, carried out by the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), Hyderabad, achieved a sustained run time of over 12 minutes, validating the design and performance of the advanced air-breathing engine required for hypersonic cruise missiles capable of speeds exceeding Mach 5.

Why it matters to India:

The successful test marks a crucial step in India’s hypersonic cruise missile development programme and places the country among a select group of nations with advanced hypersonic capabilities. It strengthens India’s indigenous defence technology base, enhances strategic deterrence, and reinforces India’s position at the forefront of cutting-edge aerospace and missile research.
