What happened:
On November 19, 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs announced that senior diplomat Charanjeet Singh, a 1996-batch IFS officer and currently Additional Secretary in the MEA, has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. He is expected to assume the role shortly.
Why it matters to India:
The appointment places an experienced negotiator at a key multilateral forum central to global arms control and non-proliferation. With India seeking a stronger voice in shaping emerging disarmament norms — from nuclear issues to new-age technologies — Singh’s leadership will be important in advancing India’s positions and ensuring its strategic interests are effectively represented on the global stage.
