What happened
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, heading an Indian Parliamentary Delegation, arrived in Bridgetown, Barbados, on October 8, 2025, to attend the 68th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) being held from October 5 to 12. The conference, one of the largest gatherings of parliamentarians from across the Commonwealth, serves as a platform for discussions on strengthening democratic institutions, promoting good governance, and addressing global challenges through parliamentary diplomacy.

During the conference, Om Birla will chair a workshop on “Leveraging Technology: Enhancing Democracy through Digital Transformations and Tackling the Digital Divide” and address the General Assembly on “The Commonwealth: A Global Partner,” underscoring India’s commitment to democratic values, inclusive governance, and global parliamentary cooperation. The Indian delegation, including 36 Presiding Officers from 24 State and Union Territory Legislatures, will participate in thematic workshops and hold bilateral meetings with counterparts to enhance parliamentary collaboration. The participation highlights India’s active role in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and its efforts to strengthen global democratic dialogue.
