What happened?
On August 31, 2025, India participated in the multinational military Exercise Bright Star held in Egypt, alongside forces from the United States, Saudi Arabia, Greece, and several other countries. The Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force took part, making it one of the rare occasions where all three services operated together in an overseas exercise. The drills included joint tactical manoeuvres, maritime operations, and counter-terrorism training aimed at enhancing interoperability with partner nations.
Why it matters to India
Participation strengthens India’s defence diplomacy and expands military-to-military engagement with both traditional partners and new collaborators in West Asia and beyond. It underscores New Delhi’s growing role as a security player and its interest in the western Indian Ocean and Mediterranean. For the armed forces, the exercise provides exposure to advanced platforms and doctrines, while politically it reinforces India’s strategic partnerships in a volatile but critical region.
