What happened?
During PM Modi’s visit to Windhoek on 9 July 2025, India and Namibia agreed to strengthen ties through the rollout of India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Namibia later this year and the launch of an Entrepreneurship Development Center. The two sides also signed MoUs on healthcare, climate-resilient infrastructure (CDRI), and the Global Biofuels Alliance.
Why it matters to India
This marks a strategic expansion of India’s digital and development diplomacy in Africa. The UPI system will enhance financial inclusion in Namibia, while the new innovation hub supports economic diversification and skill-building. Agreements in health, clean energy, and infrastructure resilience reflect India’s commitment to climate action and its growing role as a South-South partner. Strengthening ties with Namibia also supports India’s broader engagement with Africa on trade, energy, and critical minerals.
