Nalanda, How it Changed the World,’ reflects the legacy of one of the world’s most renowned ancient universities, the ancient seat of learning, Nalanda. The book draws connections between the ancient university’s spirit of inquiry and today’s quest for global cooperation, a perspective unique to Ambassador Abhay K.

Nalanda’s long-term decline began with the slow loss of royal patronage, which had supported it for centuries. Ashoka built a stupa in 3rd century BCE at Nalanda for Shariputra, the Buddha’s Chief male disciple, who hailed from Nalanda, and established a vihara for the monks to study. The Guptas, Harshavardhana and the Palas made generous donations, including revenue from many villages. Over time, support for Buddhism declined as other religions gained popularity. Buddhism itself became more esoteric with the rise of Vajrayana, making it less accessible to the common people

In one of the most evocative poems The Rise of Nalanda, Abhay K reimagines the spirit of Nalanda:

I open my arms today to embrace you whoever you are, from wherever you are, come, walk into my enlightened fold as once Buddha and Mahavira did seeking shelter in my groves… I hear the footsteps of Aryabhata, in my ancient compound today, you too come; come as I rise again.
