While the case of Greenland has caught global attention, the reference to the UK-Mauritius Chagos agreement in President Trump’s recent remarks at Davos has given rise to speculation about the status and future of Diego Garcia. By calling the deal—especially the decision to cede sovereignty to Mauritius—“an act of total weakness and great stupidity”, President Trump negated earlier US support for the deal. This leaves an impression that the US cannot be relied upon to retain a firm stance on previously agreed issues of mutual convergence and interest.
