Enrico D’Ambrogio’s article, EU-India relations: Time for a new boost? published by the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS), argues that the EU-India strategic partnership is expanding beyond trade cooperation into security, climate action, and technology collaboration. The article highlights how the EU and India, celebrating 60 years of bilateral relations, are reinforcing their ties through initiatives like the Trade and Technology Council (TTC) and ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA). The EU aims to leverage India’s economic growth and strategic location in the Indo-Pacific, while India seeks to expand its influence through stronger partnerships with Western powers.

The article underscores the broadening of cooperation into defense and security, including joint naval exercises, counter-terrorism efforts, and space security. In May 2024, the second consultations on security and defense took place in New Delhi, reflecting growing collaboration. The EU and India also strengthen their connectivity strategy through the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and digital policy partnerships, positioning India as a critical player in the region’s maritime security and global trade stability.

However, the article emphasizes that challenges remain. Differences over the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and deforestation regulations create friction in trade negotiations. Additionally, the EU is concerned about India’s neutral stance on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its human rights record, while India views the EU’s regulatory policies as detrimental to its domestic industries.
From an Indian perspective, this partnership enhances India’s role as a regional security player and a rising global power. The article suggests that institutionalizing the relationship through regular high-level dialogues, enhancing technological collaboration, and addressing trade disputes will solidify the EU-India partnership. Ultimately, the article argues that deepening EU-India cooperation will boost both parties’ influence in a multipolar world.
