Indian flag hoisted atop Space Needle in Seattle

What happened?

On August 15, 2025, the Indian flag was hoisted at the Space Needle in Seattle, US, marking the first time the tricolour was raised at this iconic 605-feet tall landmark. Built in 1962 for the World Fair, the Space Needle is a symbol of Seattle’s skyline and the tech-driven future of the US Pacific Northwest. The Indian Consulate in Seattle confirmed the event, with Consul General Prakash Gupta and Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell present to celebrate alongside a large gathering of the Indian-American community.

Why it matters to India

The event honoured the significant contributions of the Indian diaspora in shaping Seattle’s rise as a tech hub. A community reception at Kerry Park, with the flag visible atop the Space Needle, featured cultural performances, including national anthems, Indian dance forms, and a poetic recital by Piyush Mishra. US Congressman Adam Smith and other dignitaries praised the occasion as a tribute to regional diversity and strong Indo-Pacific ties. Additionally, King County proclaimed August 15 as India Day, and several Seattle buildings, including Lumen Stadium and T-Mobile Stadium, were lit up in the Indian tricolour, symbolising the growing friendship between India and the Pacific Northwest.
