India Successfully Tests Astra BVR Missile from Su-30MKI

What happened?

On 11 July 2025, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted a flight test of the Astra Beyond-Visual-Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM) off the Odisha coast. The tests involved two live firings from a Su-30MKI fighter jet at unmanned aerial targets with different approach angles and distances. Both targets were destroyed with high accuracy, validating the missile’s indigenous radio-frequency (RF) seeker and onboard guidance systems.

Why it matters to India

The successful test marks a significant step in India’s quest for self-reliance in advanced missile technologies. With a range of over 100 km, Astra enhances the IAF’s air dominance capabilities by enabling long-range engagements. The missile’s indigenous RF seeker, developed with contributions from over 50 Indian industries, represents a breakthrough in critical defence tech. It also reduces reliance on foreign weapon systems and aligns with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative. The test strengthens national security, boosts domestic defence manufacturing, and reinforces India’s status as an aerospace power.
