India-France Joint Military Exercise SHAKTI Commences

What happened?

The 8th edition of the biennial Indo-French Joint Military Exercise SHAKTI began today at La Cavalerie, France. The Indian Army contingent consists of 90 personnel, primarily from a battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, along with personnel from other arms and services. The French contingent, represented by the 13th Foreign Legion Half-Brigade, also comprises 90 personnel. The exercise, a bilateral training engagement between the Indian and French Armies, aims to enhance interoperability, operational coordination, and mutual understanding. The 2025 edition focuses on joint operations in a sub-conventional environment under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, with training taking place in semi-urban terrain.

Why it matters to India

Exercise SHAKTI is significant for India as it directly contributes to enhancing the operational capabilities of the Indian Army through joint tactical drills and the sharing of best practices with a key strategic partner like France. The focus on operations in a sub-conventional environment under the UN Charter is particularly relevant for India’s participation in global peacekeeping efforts and counter-terrorism operations. Strengthening interoperability and mutual understanding with the French armed forces fosters a deeper defence cooperation, which is crucial for India’s geopolitical objectives and regional stability. This bilateral engagement reinforces India’s commitment to international security cooperation and builds stronger bonds of camaraderie and trust with a major global power.
