India elected unopposed to UN Human Rights Council for seventh time

What happened

On October 15, 2025, India was elected unopposed to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the seventh time, securing a three-year term beginning next year.  Permanent Representative P. Harish said the election “reflects India’s unwavering commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms” and expressed India’s readiness to serve this objective during its tenure. In its nomination, India highlighted its dedication to advancing global human rights, fostering dialogue, and bridging divides to achieve collective progress.

Why it matters to India

The election underscores India’s commitment to promoting justice, liberty, and equality in line with its constitutional guarantees and the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (“the world is one family”). The Geneva-based 47-member HRC serves as the UN’s primary body for reviewing human rights situations worldwide and providing a platform for dialogue on human rights issues. India secured 177 out of 188 votes for the Asia-Pacific group seat and will work towards bridging divisions within the HRC, reflecting its broader effort to foster global cooperation. India last served on the HRC in 2024, taking a mandatory break before contesting the new term.
