What happened
On October 10, 2025, Rolls-Royce announced its intent to work with the Indian Navy in designing and deploying India’s first electric warship, supporting the country’s push for a modern and sustainable naval fleet. The announcement comes as the United Kingdom’s Carrier Strike Group (CSG), led by HMS Prince of Wales, arrived in Mumbai during its Indo-Pacific deployment. Rolls-Royce highlighted its portfolio of hybrid-electric and full-electric propulsion systems, including the MT30 marine gas turbine powering HMS Prince of Wales, which forms part of its Integrated Full Electric Propulsion system.
Why it matters to India
The collaboration aligns with India’s vision for self-reliant and future-ready defence capabilities. Rolls-Royce’s experience in advanced naval propulsion, including engines installed on Indian Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, and Army platforms, will support operational readiness, resilience, and extended maritime reach. The engagement also strengthens Indo-UK defence cooperation, showcasing India’s growing focus on electrification and hybrid technologies for naval modernisation and long-term strategic capability development.
