What happened?
On 4 July 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the country’s highest civilian award, during his official visit to Port of Spain. Modi became the first foreign leader to receive the honour, which was awarded for his global statesmanship, advocacy for the Global South, and efforts to strengthen India–Trinidad and Tobago ties. The event marked the 180th anniversary of Indian arrival in the country and was attended by President Christine Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Why it matters to India
The award underscores India’s rising diplomatic stature and Modi’s personal role in shaping South-South solidarity. It also reflects the deep cultural and civilisational bonds between India and the Indian diaspora in the Caribbean. The symbolic recognition enhances India’s influence in the region and complements efforts to position New Delhi as a voice for the Global South. The visit also set the stage for expanded cooperation in digital infrastructure, education, healthcare, and multilateral alignment.
